Who or What is GLAG? PDF Print E-mail
Friday, 15 February 2008
The Green Lanes Access Group (GLAG) is a semi-formal group of like minded individuals who want to preserve our network of byways and unsurfaced roads for everyone to use; this includes use by motorists, carriage drivers, horse riders, walkers and cyclists. The network of Byways Open to All Traffic (BOATs) and Unclassified Country Roads (UCRs), which are the routes open to all categories of users has shrunk dramatically over the past few years, especially so since the passing of the Natural Environment & Rural Communities Act in 2006. BOATs and UCRs currently make up only about 2% of the Rights of Way network in England and Wales.

Universal access to these routes is under threat from various pressure groups who wish to either have them closed completely or downgraded to footpaths or bridleways. This pressure is being added to by a minority of motorised users who abuse the network by driving off the correct route and over private land or by driving lanes that are completely unsuitable by dint of them being too soft to withstand the weight of a vehicle, or too narrow, or at unsuitable times of the day or year, etc.

GLAG's aim is to reduce the amount of unsustainable use of our green lanes by educating all users in what is, and is not acceptable usage. In essence, our view is that if you leave damaging evidence of your passing over or along a route then perhaps you shouldn't be using that route?

For motorised users, please read our "Code of Conduct" on the website at www.glag.co.uk which sets out what we think is an acceptable access policy.

GLAG is open to everyone that uses our network of byways. There is no charge to register, there is no subscription to pay. Over time we fervently hope that you will be able to find all the information that you need pertaining to byways on this forum or website. All that we ask in return is that you treat the lanes, and our members with respect.

If you have any comments or suggestions about GLAG, it's aims or this forum or the website then either post them on the Suggestions section or email them to me at This e-mail address is being protected from spam bots, you need JavaScript enabled to view it

Enjoy the lanes and we hope to have a long association with you here.

Best wishes.
